چکیده

INTRODUCTION: It is estimated that 11% of the global disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) are attributable to surgically treatable diseases, 66% of which are related to injuries, masses, and congenital deformities.1 When located within the head, face, and neck region, plastic surgeons are particularly trained to treat these conditions, however most low-income countries report less than 5 plastic surgeons for their entire country.2 The purpose of this study was to describe the disease etiologies of the head, face, mouth, and neck region. Furthermore, it aims to explore the proportion of people receiving care, barriers to receiving care, and the long-term disability attributed to craniomaxillofacial diseases.

A comprehensive approach to long-standing facial paralysis based on lengthening temporalis myoplasty

Long-standing peripheral monolateral facial paralysis in the adult has challenged otolaryngologists, neurologists and plastic surgeons for centuries. Notwithstanding, the ultimate goal of normality of the paralyzed hemi-face with symmetry at rest, and the achievement of a spontaneous symmetrical smile with corneal protection, has not been fully reached. At the beginning of the 20(th) century, t...

Quality-of-life improvement after free gracilis muscle transfer for smile restoration in patients with facial paralysis.

IMPORTANCE Facial paralysis can contribute to disfigurement, psychological difficulties, and an inability to convey emotion via facial expression. In patients unable to perform a meaningful smile, free gracilis muscle transfer (FGMT) can often restore smile function. However, little is known about the impact on disease-specific quality of life. OBJECTIVE To determine quantitatively whether FG...

Minimally invasive temporalis tendon transposition.

OBJECTIVE To describe a minimally invasive approach of the temporalis tendon transposition technique for dynamic reanimation in patients with long-standing facial paralysis. METHODS We report a case series of 17 consecutive patients with facial paralysis who underwent minimally invasive temporalis tendon transposition surgery for dynamic facial reanimation between January 1, 2006, and Decembe...

Salvage procedures after failed facial reanimation surgery using the masseteric nerve as the motor nerve for free functional gracilis muscle transfer.

IMPORTANCE Free muscle transfer innervated by a cross-facial nerve graft represents the criterion standard for smile reconstruction in facial paralysis. If primary reconstruction fails, a second muscle transfer is usually needed. Herein, we investigated the possibility of avoiding a second free muscle transfer by in situ coaptation of the gracilis muscle to the masseteric nerve. OBSERVATIONS ...

Abstract: Comparison of Muscle Activity and Facial Symmetry in Lengthening Temporalis Myoplasty Vs. Two-Stage Free Gracilis Muscle Transfer in Children

RESULTS: Fourteen patients met inclusion criteria. Six patients had congenital facial palsy and 8 patients had acquired. The average age at time of surgery was 10.3 ± 4.4 years for congenital and 14.0 ± 5.7 years for acquired etiology (p=0.20) Causes of congenital disease included idiopathic (5) and birth trauma (1). Causes for acquired facial palsy were tumor resection (5), meningitis (1), and...
